The historic Mount Florida Bowling Club on Carmunnock Road has been a part of the community since 1909. Early in 2019, the local community learned that this much treasured local asset was set for closure with discussions at a seemingly advanced stage with developers.
The Mount Florida Community Trust (MFCT) was established in June 2019 by a group of 7 local residents, united in their aims to retain the site for the benefit of the community. The Trust now has 5 Directors (see Director Profiles) and is always ready to welcome more volunteers.
The Trust is structured as a Company Limited by Guarantee with Ministerial approval.
We are dedicated to exploring local support and opinions for re-purposing the site. In October 2019 the Trust submitted a Planning Application outlining a range of amendments and improvements to the site to meet 21st century interests and needs. That application was approved by Glasgow City Council Planning Committee on 1st September 2020.
Key themes flowing through the Trust include the need for the space to be sustainable (both financially and environmentally) and be welcoming and inclusive to the community as a whole. It is understood from review of the Council’s Strategic Plans and Objectives (and evident in the local area) that there is a shortage of open, green spaces, and the Trust aims to retain this open space.
The hope was originally that a smaller Bowling Club could run alongside more diverse activities and community interests; with the Club becoming a Community Hub and resource for many; not the few. With the passage of time and neglect of the site by its current owner, the greens are now in a sad state. We recognise that it may not be financially viable to restore in the same way as before. However we strongly believe that the site can become an asset for local groups and valuable outdoor/ recreation space for all needs and age ranges.
